Our Diocese

The Diocese of Durham is centred in the historic city of Durham and serves the region of North East England bordered by Gateshead and the River Tyne in the North to the historic industrial town of Stockton on the River Tees in the South. Featuring beautiful coastal beaches, historical UNESCO sites, Universities in Durham, Sunderland and Teesside, villages, new-towns and many ex-industrial communities, Durham is an area rich in heritage, diverse in nature and rich in challenge and opportunity for Mission to the 1.5 million people who call this area home.

In recognising national social trends and a lower than average local church attendance, the Bishops Leadership Team have identified Growth, serving and engaging Young People and responding to Poverty in all its forms as our Diocesan priorities at this time. MLG is one element of our response to this and will be crucial in resourcing clergy and their churches to look outward.

With over 200 parishes in areas that range from lush countryside to towns and cities, the Durham Diocese is an exciting place to come and contribute to God’s mission and our call to bless our communities in Jesus’ name for the transformation of us all.
